Herbal medicines are the most ancient form of medicine in the world. China, being one of the oldest civilizations, has been a natural breeding ground for the discovery and practice of herbal medicines.
Among all the herbs, Ginseng family of herbs has been considered among the most effective and as having a large number of applications. Ginseng family of herbs has following varieties,
- Panax Ginseng (Chinese Ginseng, Korean Ginseng, Oriental Ginseng),
- American Ginseng,
- Panax Notoginseng (San Qi, Tian Qi, Pseudoginseng) and
- Siberian Ginseng
All the above varieties belong to the same species "Panax". Though all varieties of Ginseng have enormous medical and therapeutic benefits, there is widespread confusion about identification and benefits of each of the variety. Before consuming a particular variety of Ginseng, it is extremely crucial to understand the actual benefits of that variety and how to distinguish that variety from the others. For example, Panax Notoginseng and Panax Ginseng have different properties and find application in different scenarios.
Web lacks in comprehensive information about this miracle herb and all the information is scattered which makes it difficult for an information seeker to connect the pieces together and gain useful insight to identify the appropriate Ginseng variety. Hence, I have started this blog to present all the useful information about San Qi, also known as “Tian Qi”, Panax Notoginseng, Notoginseng or Pseudoginseng.
San Qi was first recorded in 1578 in the Compendium of Materia Medica by Li Shizen, and was described as being more valuable than gold due to its miraculous benefits and application in preventing several diseases. San Qi grows naturally and is cultivated in Yunnan province in Southern China. Because of its quality to stem bleeding, it was extensively used during Vietnam War to heal the wounds. Some of the well known benefits of this herb are,
- Increase blood flow in the coronary artery, which supplies blood to the heart, thus increasing the consumption of oxygen by the heart which results in lowering the blood pressure
- Prevent chest pain caused due to angina
- Reduce cholesterol and strengthen the coronary arteries
- Stop bleeding, both internal and external
- Reduce the risk of stroke and enhances recovery after stroke
- Protects the liver
- Stem the growth of prostrate cancer
I will continue to use this space to provide more information about this miracle herb, so stay tuned.
